ENJOY Waterton differently.

You are coming to the Canadian Rockies for the views, the fresh alpine air, and maybe just a little bit of leg-burning glory. We put together the ultimate multi-day itinerary that gives you the absolute best of Waterton Lakes National Park, plus a few local secrets tucked away just up the road where the cell service happily disappears. This is much less crowded than Banff.

Here is how you can structure your trip for the perfect mix of epic summits, hidden gems, and active recovery.

Day 1: The Welcome (Waterton Lakes National Park)

You just arrived. Let's start the trip without blowing out your knees on day one.

  • Morning: Kick off your vacation with a Gentle Waterton Sunrise Walking Tour with Breakfast. It is the perfect way to get your bearings, learn some fascinating natural history from a local expert, and enjoy a fantastic outdoor breakfast while watching the sun hit the peaks before the park gets busy.

  • Afternoon: Keep it low-impact. Explore the Waterton townsite or book an Easy Guided Wildflower Walk to stretch your legs and prep for the big elevation tomorrow.

Day 2: The Main Event (Carthew-Alderson Trail)

Lace up the boots. It is time for the highlight reel.

  • All Day Hike: The Carthew-Alderson Trail is a premier Alberta hiking experience. Expect sweeping panoramic mountain views from the summit, rugged peaks, and pristine alpine waters at Carthew and Alderson Lakes. Yes, your quads will burn. Yes, it is completely worth it. Going with a Waterton Tours guide means we handle the logistics, pacing, and safety so you can just focus on the staggering Canadian Rockies scenery.

Day 3: The Hidden Gem Recovery (Beauvais Lake Provincial Park)

Time to escape the National Park crowds. Just a short drive north of Waterton sits Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, a stunning area that most tourists drive right past. This is where the locals go.

  • The Hike: Tackle the Piney Point Loop. It is a fantastic, moderately trafficked 5.3km circuit. It winds through the forest before taking you up a few short, steep switchbacks to an incredible ridge viewpoint (elevation 1,560 meters) looking right down over Beauvais Lake. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, making it the absolute perfect "active recovery" hike after conquering Carthew.

  • Go Guided: Want to explore more of this area without staring at a map? Connect with the crew at Uplift Adventures to book a custom guided tour or nature walk in Beauvais. They know exactly where the best lookouts and wildlife spots are hidden.

Day 4: Deep Rockies Adventure (Castle Provincial Park or Crowsnest Pass)

Now that you are acclimatized and have checked Waterton off the bucket list, it is time to get a little wilder.

  • All Day Hike: Let Uplift Adventures take the wheel. Head further north into Castle Provincial Park or the Crowsnest Pass for a rugged, off-the-beaten-path excursion. While our Waterton tours are designed for immersive learning and iconic sights, Uplift's signature trips are designed for pure, unfiltered mountain adventure.

Word on the Trail

Because bragging about ourselves is awkward. We’ll let our guests do it.

We hiked to Bertha Falls in Waterton Park as a private trip guided by Heather. She has a great knowledge of local plant life and lore. Beyond this, she is extremely personable and a pleasure to interact with, going at our own pace and stopping many times to view and discuss plant life and geology along the trail.

Highly recommend this option if one of the listed hikes doesn't seem quite right.

Allan K.

Wonderful guiding experience with Heather. She is a "master level" guide but most importantly she has the communication skills to explain the complex geology, flowers, animals, and ecology of this unique and beautiful place - in a manner that we could really understand and feel. I am 77 and always felt safe and inspired in her expert guiding. Just like when I was a kid!!
Thank you Heather,

What to expect when playing with us!

Cameron Lake Waterton Park

We’re obsessed with these mountains! Honestly, it’s a toss-up between the epic summit views and a massive, well-earned Kilmorey Burger with fries at the end of the day. (Followed by a BeaverTails pastry, obviously we’re professionals here.)

At Uplift, we don’t just "walk you through the mountains" and call it a day. That’s for Sunday strolls. We’re here to give you a literal and metaphorical uplift by connecting you to the wild, weird, and wonderful secrets of Waterton. Our guides are essentially human encyclopedias with awesome hiking boots, ready to dish on everything from the "dirty secrets" of local wildflowers to the ancient tectonic tantrums that shoved these mountains into the sky.

We’re big on the "Leave No Trace" life because, frankly, the mountains were here first and we’d like to keep them looking this good. We weave stewardship into every trek, so our playground stays pristine for the next round of adventurers.

Come for the vista. Stay for the vibes. Leave with a new favourite peak (and maybe a loosened pant button).
